How to Use This Handbook

A map for the learner, parent and guru

This handbook is written for a learner who is no longer a complete beginner. Four years of practical sitar exposure usually means the hands already know more than the student can explain in words. The aim here is to make practical knowledge conscious: to connect the sound under the fingers with the language of Hindustani music.

Three-layer method: 1) UNDERSTAND: read the idea in plain language. 2) HEAR: locate it in a raga, tala or recording. 3) DO: sing, clap, identify, notate or play it. A concept is not fully learnt until the ear, voice, mind and hand agree.

A word to the young reader

This book uses the real words of Hindustani music — swara, tala, meend, thaat — because musicians everywhere use them, and you deserve the real vocabulary. Do not worry if a word looks big: every term is explained where it first appears and again in the Glossary at the back. Read a little at a time, always with your instrument or your voice nearby, and ask your guru or a parent whenever something feels foggy. In this book, look for the boxes called "In simple words" — they say the hardest ideas in the easiest way.

A note on tradition and variation

Hindustani music is a living oral tradition. Aroh, avaroh, pakad, vadi-samvadi, phrase priorities, fingering, mizrab patterns and even tuning may differ across gharanas, teachers and texts. Where a commonly taught convention is shown, the student should still follow the guru for final performance decisions. This is especially important for Bageshri, Des, Khamaj and sitar tuning.

ABGMVM Gayan–Vadan (Swar Vadya): practical and oral-theory orientation

The official ABGMVM syllabus for Prarambhik Gayan–Vadan (Swar Vadya) treats the level as an introduction to swara and tala with simple practical use. Theory is tested orally during the practical examination. The official document shows 50 marks in total, divided into 40 practical and 10 oral theory, with 18 as the minimum overall score.

1. What Is Music?

From sound to organised musical thought

At the simplest level, music is organised sound experienced through time. But Hindustani music asks a deeper question: when does a sound become meaningful enough to carry identity, movement, tension, rest and emotion? A single Sa can be ordinary, unstable, resonant, peaceful or expectant depending on pitch accuracy, tone, duration, surrounding swaras and the raga context.

The traditional word sangita (संगीत) is often used broadly for music and, in older conceptual traditions, may encompass vocal music, instrumental music and dance. For a sitar student, this matters because instrumental playing is not isolated from singing. The best instrumental phrase often behaves like a sung phrase: it breathes, approaches, rests and speaks.

Why do we study theory?

Think like a musician: When you learn a term, always ask five questions: WHAT is it? WHY does it matter? HOW is it produced or recognised? WHEN is it used? WHERE does it appear in the raga, tala, composition or performance?

2. Sound, Dhvani, Nada and Shruti

The physical event and the musical experience

Sound begins with vibration. A sitar string displaced by the mizrab moves back and forth. That motion sets surrounding air into pressure variations, and the ear-brain system interprets them as sound. The pitch we hear depends strongly on vibration frequency, while loudness relates to vibration amplitude and perception. Timbre — the quality that makes a sitar sound unlike a flute even on the same pitch — depends on the pattern of harmonics, attack, decay, resonance and instrument construction.

Dhvani (ध्वनि). Dhvani is a broad word for sound. Not every sound is automatically a musical swara. A door closing produces sound; a carefully tuned Sa produces a stable musical reference.

Nada (नाद). In elementary music theory, nada is commonly explained as a musical or musically usable sound arising from regular vibration. Textual traditions discuss nada in more philosophical ways as well, but for Prarambhik study the important point is that the musician learns to control and recognise organised sound.

Shruti (श्रुति). Shruti is one of the most misunderstood terms. In classical theory it refers to fine pitch distinctions and perceptible microtonal positions. The well-known theoretical framework of 22 shrutis belongs to Indian musicological thought, but a beginner should not imagine 22 equal piano keys inside an octave. In practice, raga intonation is relational and context-sensitive: a swara may be approached, shaded or sustained differently according to raga and gharana.

In simple words: Between any two notes there is not empty space but a smooth slope of sound — your meend proves it every day. Shruti is the name for the tiny pitch positions on that slope that a trained ear can hear. The seven swaras are like railway stations; the shrutis are all the scenery between them. Old theory books counted 22 such positions in an octave, but you do not need to count them — you need to hear that the space between notes is alive.

Sitar connection. A movable fret and a pulled string make the sitar an excellent instrument for hearing continuous pitch. Meend shows that musical movement is not restricted to jumping from one fixed key to another. The space between named swaras is musically alive.

Experiment

  1. Pluck an open string gently, then strongly. Notice what changes: loudness, attack and the activation of sympathetic strings.
  2. Play the same swara with a dry short stroke and then with a longer ringing stroke. The pitch may be the same, but the musical effect changes.
  3. Take a slow meend toward Ga. Stop slightly early, exactly on Ga, and slightly high. Train the ear to notice the difference.

Sur, besur and the idea of samvad

Being "in sur" means the swara sits exactly where the ear expects it in relation to Sa and the surrounding raga context. "Besur" means the pitch has drifted. Sur is not a talent given only to singers; it is a trainable relationship between ear, voice and hand, and it is the single most important quality an examiner listens for.

Samvad means consonance — the sense of agreement between two swaras. The strongest samvad relationships in Hindustani theory are Sa-Pa (the shadja-pancham bhav) and Sa-Ma (the shadja-madhyam bhav). This is why the tanpura and the sitar's drone strings usually sound Sa and Pa (or Sa and Ma in some ragas): they build a stable field of consonance inside which every other swara finds its place. The traditional vadi-samvadi pairing of a raga also tends to follow a strong consonant relationship, often a fourth or fifth apart.

Daily sur habit: Before every practice session, sing Sa softly against the drone until the voice and the drone seem to merge into one sound. Then sing Sa-Pa-Sa and Sa-Ma-Sa slowly. Two minutes of this builds more musicianship than twenty minutes of inattentive playing.

3. Swara: The Musical Note With a Role

Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni are not just labels

A swara (स्वर) is a musically meaningful pitch position. Hindustani music uses seven basic swara names: Shadja (Sa), Rishabh (Re), Gandhar (Ga), Madhyam (Ma), Pancham (Pa), Dhaivat (Dha) and Nishad (Ni). The next Sa completes the octave relationship and begins a new saptak.

Achal and vikrit swaras

Sa and Pa are called achal in the elementary system because they do not have komal or tivra forms. Re, Ga, Dha and Ni may become komal (lowered relative to their shuddha positions). Ma may become tivra (raised relative to shuddha Ma). This gives twelve named swara positions in common modern pedagogy: seven shuddha positions plus five altered positions.

A useful way to remember the twelve positions is by class: two achal swaras that never change (Sa, Pa), five shuddha swaras that have altered twins (Re, Ga, Ma, Dha, Ni), four komal forms (re, ga, dha, ni) and one tivra form (Ma). In written notation, komal swaras are commonly shown with a small horizontal line beneath the letter and tivra Ma with a small vertical line above it in the Bhatkhande convention; in informal Roman writing, lower-case letters often stand for komal swaras, as in this handbook's raga tables.

Why is Sa movable?

Hindustani music is tonic-centred rather than tied to one universal absolute Sa. A singer chooses a comfortable tonic; an instrumentalist tunes to a chosen tonic. Once Sa is fixed, all other swaras are heard in relation to it. Therefore "Sa" is a function and relationship, not always one fixed frequency for every musician.

Exam tip: Do not merely recite "Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni". Be ready to sing or play small groups such as Sa-Re, Ma-Pa, Dha-Ni, Sa-Re-Ga, or descending groups, and identify them by ear.

4. Saptak, Pitch Register and the Geography of Melody

Where a swara lives matters

A saptak is a seven-swara register. Beginner study usually names three: mandra saptak (lower register), madhya saptak (middle register) and taar saptak (upper register). The same swara name repeats at an octave relationship, but its register changes its expressive function.

Why register changes meaning. Imagine Ni below Sa and Ni just below upper Sa. Both are called Ni, but their directional pull is different because of register and phrase context. Raga identity depends on such relationships, not on isolated note names.

Notation convention used in this handbook. Plain letters indicate madhya saptak. A lower-register swara may be marked with a dot below in formal notation; an upper-register swara may be marked with a dot above. Because plain-text rendering differs across devices, this handbook often writes "lower n" or "upper S" in explanatory sentences. The student should learn the exact notation system used by the guru and examination text.

5. Alankar and Palta

Patterns that train the ear, mind and fingers

An alankar is an organised swara pattern. At beginner level, alankars develop pitch memory, finger coordination, mizrab control, directional awareness and laya. But an alankar is not a raga. A pattern becomes raga-relevant only when its swaras and movement respect the raga grammar.

Practice rule: First make the pattern even and accurate in slow laya. Then increase speed. Speed before clarity trains mistakes. On sitar, practise with the mizrab pattern prescribed by the guru; do not force one universal da-ra formula onto every phrase.

6. What Is a Raga?

Why a raga is much more than a scale

A raga is a melodic framework with identity. It selects and organises swaras, favours characteristic movements, creates points of emphasis and rest, and generates a recognisable musical personality. Two ragas can use the same set of swaras and still sound different because movement and hierarchy differ.

In simple words: A raga is like a person you know well. Two friends might own the very same clothes (the same notes), yet you can tell them apart in a second by how they walk, where they pause, and what they say first (the movements, resting notes and favourite phrases). Learning a raga means getting to know a musical personality — not memorising a shopping list of notes.

The scale misconception. Suppose a learner knows the aroh and avaroh. That is useful, but insufficient. If every performance simply runs up and down those notes, the result may be a scale exercise. Raga appears when the musician knows which phrases carry identity, how swaras are approached, where to rest, what to avoid, and how to expand without losing character.

A practical definition. A raga is a disciplined field of melodic possibilities. Freedom exists inside identity. The musician is not reading a fixed tune, yet is not free to use every movement.

7. The Grammar of Raga

When and where do these ideas appear? They appear in raga description, oral viva, notation, listening and performance. Aroh-avroh may be asked directly. Pakad can be demonstrated. Vadi-samvadi and time may be oral-theory questions. Nyas and chalan become visible when the examiner hears whether the student truly understands the raga rather than reproducing memorised notes.

Varna: the four kinds of melodic movement

Classical theory describes every melodic gesture as one of four varnas — four basic kinds of movement. Knowing them gives the student precise words for what a phrase is actually doing.

Alap, taan and vistar are all built from combinations of these four movements. When a guru says "develop the phrase", the practical meaning is: use sthayi movement to establish a swara, arohi and avarohi movement to travel, and sanchari movement to explore — all inside the raga's grammar.

Purvang and uttarang

The octave is often divided into two halves: the purvang (roughly Sa to Pa) and the uttarang (roughly Ma or Pa up to taar Sa). Many ragas have their centre of gravity clearly in one half — the vadi swara usually lives there — and traditional time theory even links purvang-prominent and uttarang-prominent ragas to different parts of the day. At Prarambhik level it is enough to hear the idea: notice whether a raga seems to bloom in its lower half (as Bageshri does around Ma) or to pull upward toward taar Sa (as Des does with its rising Re-Ma-Pa-Ni ascent).

8. Thaat

A classification map — useful, but not the raga itself

A thaat is a parent-scale classification used prominently in modern Hindustani pedagogy, especially through the system associated with Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande. A raga may be assigned to a thaat according to its swara material, but the thaat does not tell us the complete raga grammar.

In simple words: A thaat is like a shelf in a library. The shelf tells you roughly where a book lives, but it tells you nothing about the story inside. Saying "Bhimpalasi belongs to Kafi thaat" is shelf information; the raga's real story is in its phrases, its resting notes and its mood. Learn the shelf for the exam — learn the story for the music.

Remember: Thaat is a filing system; raga is a musical personality. Bhupali is commonly classified under Kalyan thaat even though it does not use Ma at all. This single example proves that thaat and raga are not the same thing.

9. Time Theory, Rasa and Musical Character

When a raga is traditionally performed, and what that does — and does not — mean

Hindustani tradition associates many ragas with particular times of day or night, and some with seasons. The system is connected to long-evolving theory, performance convention and aesthetic expectation. At Prarambhik level, the student should know the prescribed time for syllabus ragas as taught by the board/guru.

The prahar system

Tradition divides the twenty-four-hour day into eight prahars of roughly three hours each — four of the day and four of the night. Ragas are conventionally placed in these prahars. The table below gives the placements most commonly taught for the syllabus ragas; where sources differ, the guru's teaching should be followed for the examination.

Why time theory matters

What time theory does not mean. It does not mean a raga physically becomes impossible at another time. Recordings, teaching, examinations and contemporary concerts often require flexibility. The learner should know the traditional rule, respect it, and understand the practical context.

On "mood". Do not reduce a raga to one English emotion such as "happy" or "sad". A raga can carry multiple shades depending on tempo, composition, performer, register and phrase. Use words like serene, devotional, expansive, yearning or playful as listening aids — not rigid definitions.

10. The Seven Prarambhik Ragas

The following profiles are designed for examination study. Aroh-avroh and phrase descriptions are given in common pedagogic forms; living traditions vary. Final performance versions should follow the guru and the notation authorised for the student's exam centre.

Character: Open, direct, dignified; often devotional or serene in treatment. Sitar focus: Aim for clean Re–Ma movement, controlled resonance, and clear resting points. Avoid accidentally touching Ga while moving between Re and Ma. Common errors: Treating it as Bhupali with changed notes; overusing straight scale runs; allowing unwanted Ga/Ni.

Vocal-side connection: Durga is a favourite for devotional bandishes and early khayal study because its five open swaras expose the voice completely — there is nowhere to hide an unsteady Re or Ma. Rasa and imagery: open, dignified, serene — often compared to moonlight on a calm landscape; savour the wide Re-Ma step. Watchlist: Bhupali shares the audav-audav structure but uses Ga and omits Ma; Malkauns is also pentatonic but built of komal colours. If you hear Ga, it is not Durga.

Why this raga sounds like itself: Because all seven positions occur, the learner must hear the special colour of komal ga and ni rather than assume a plain major-like scale. Character: earthy, intimate, flexible; connected historically with many semi-classical and folk colours. Sitar focus: tune the ear carefully for komal ga and ni; slow approach and sustain. Common errors: playing shuddha Ga/Ni; making every phrase symmetrical; confusing Kafi with Bhimpalasi.

Common errors: using only one Ni without context; inserting Re mechanically in ascent; turning it into a plain scale.

A student who sings, even simply and privately, learns raga from the inside: the voice cannot hide behind frets, so the ear is forced to lead.

Breath, posture and aakar

Sit as you would for the sitar: tall, relaxed, weight settled. Breathe low and quietly, letting the abdomen move rather than the shoulders. Aakar means singing on the open vowel "aa". It is the core voice exercise of Hindustani training because the open vowel exposes pitch exactly and builds even tone across the register. Begin every vocal session with long, soft aakar on Sa against a drone, then extend to Sa-Re-Ga-Re-Sa and slowly widen the range. Loudness is not the goal; steadiness is.

Sthayi and antara

Nearly every vocal bandish — and every instrumental gat — has two limbs. 14. Tala: Measuring Musical Time in Cycles

Why tala is not the same as a metronome

Tala (ताल) is a cyclic organisation of time. A metronome gives evenly spaced pulses; tala gives a recurring structure with hierarchy. Matras are counted inside vibhags; some divisions receive claps (tali), one may be shown by a wave (khali), and the first matra of the cycle — sam — has special structural importance.

In simple words: Think of tala as a merry-go-round, not a straight road. It keeps coming back to the same starting point — sam — after a fixed number of beats. Every gat the sitar student learns will one day be played with a tabla player. The tabla is not a metronome in human form: it is a melodic-percussive partner with its own language, and the soloist who understands it earns better accompaniment.

The counting rule is simple: from your starting matra, count how many matras remain up to and including the next sam. If that number is exactly three times the length of your phrase, the tihai will land on sam. In the example above: from matra 3 up to matra 17 is fifteen matras, and fifteen is three times five. At this stage the student need not compose tihais — it is enough to hear one coming and clap its landing.

Clapping game for tihai: Recite Teentaal's theka while a parent or friend claps any short phrase three times, starting wherever they like. Your job: say "sam!" at the exact matra where the third repetition ends. Then swap roles. Five minutes of this builds the cycle-arithmetic that professional musicians carry effortlessly.

Respect for the accompanist: The tabla player is a partner, never a servant of the melody. Learn to recite the theka of every tala you play, listen to tabla solos with real attention, and thank your accompanist on and off stage. Great sitarists have always been great listeners to percussion.

A plucked string vibrates in a fundamental pattern plus higher partials. The bridge, tabli, body cavity, string length, tension, material and plucking point shape what reaches the ear. The sitar's jawari bridge creates a special evolving contact between vibrating string and bridge surface, producing the bright, complex, sustained spectrum associated with the instrument.

In simple words: On most string instruments the string touches the bridge at one sharp point, like a ball bouncing on a table edge. On the sitar the string grazes a gently curved surface, like a ball rolling along a shallow dish — so the string keeps whispering against the bridge as it vibrates. That whisper is the shimmering, buzzing sweetness that makes a sitar sound like a sitar.

Sympathetic resonance: Taraf strings are tuned to selected pitches. When a played note or harmonic component matches a taraf's natural frequency closely enough, that string can vibrate without being directly plucked. This creates a halo of resonance. The phenomenon is physical, but its musical effect depends on careful tuning and raga context.

Masitkhani and Razakhani gat: Sitar traditions distinguish important gat types associated historically with named lineages and characteristic tempo/bol structures. Masitkhani gat is commonly associated with slower development, while Razakhani gat is commonly associated with faster movement. At Prarambhik stage, the student should know only what the guru has actually taught and should avoid giving advanced formulae from memory without being able to demonstrate them.

24. A Cautious History of Hindustani Music

Continuity, change, migration, courts, temples, institutions and technology

Hindustani music did not begin on one date and was not invented by one person. It is the result of long, overlapping histories across the Indian subcontinent. Ancient textual traditions, devotional movements, regional courts, Persianate cultural exchange, temple and court patronage, hereditary musician communities, colonial-era institutions, print, recording and radio all contributed to the world we now call Hindustani classical music.

Ancient foundations: Vedic chant, including Sama-related chant traditions, forms an important ancient musical context. However, a careful student should not claim that today's raga system is simply unchanged Vedic music. Across centuries, ideas of pitch, melodic type, performance and classification evolved.

Natyashastra and early theory: The Natyashastra is a foundational Sanskrit treatise on performance, including music-related concepts. Its dating is debated and spans scholarly estimates across the late BCE and early CE centuries. It belongs to a much earlier conceptual world than modern khayal or sitar.

Brihaddeshi and the concept of raga: Matanga's Brihaddeshi is important in histories of Indian music because it discusses raga in a developed theoretical discourse. This is one reason music historians avoid treating raga as a timeless, unchanged object.

Sangita Ratnakara: Sharngadeva's thirteenth-century Sangita Ratnakara is a major synthesis. It predates the fully formed modern division into Hindustani and Carnatic systems and became important to later musicological traditions.

Dhrupad, devotional currents and courts: Between the late medieval and early modern periods, dhrupad became a major classical form with links to courtly, devotional and lineage traditions. Figures such as Swami Haridas and Tansen occupy major places in cultural memory, although legend and documented history must be distinguished carefully.

Khayal and regional styles: Khayal grew into the dominant Hindustani vocal genre over the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, developing through regional centres and gharanas. Its improvisational possibilities influenced instrumental musicians too, especially later gayaki-ang approaches.

Nineteenth and twentieth century transformation: Urbanisation, princely courts, public concerts, music schools, notation, gramophone recording, All India Radio and universities changed how music was transmitted. Two major reformers — Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar and Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande — helped expand institutional music education in the early twentieth century, though their projects and methods were different.

Global circulation: In the twentieth century, recordings and international touring brought Hindustani music to global audiences. Sitarists including Ravi Shankar and Vilayat Khan became globally influential in different ways, while many other masters shaped the instrument's technique, repertoire and aesthetics.

History habit: When a story says "X invented Y", ask: What is the evidence? Is this legend, oral memory, textual record or modern scholarship? Music history deserves the same critical thinking as music theory.

26. Gharana and Guru-Shishya Parampara

Lineage, style and responsibility

A gharana is a lineage/style identity that may involve family, discipleship, repertoire, aesthetics and technique. It is not merely a city label and not every musician fits one box. Gharana boundaries can overlap, change and be debated.

Guru-shishya parampara: The guru-shishya relationship historically emphasises close transmission, imitation, correction, repertoire and values. Modern learners may study weekly rather than live with a guru, but the principle remains: subtle music cannot be learnt entirely from books. A text can define meend; only guided listening and correction can teach whether a meend belongs to the raga and arrives in sur.

Student responsibility: Respect does not mean passive memorisation. A strong student listens carefully, asks precise questions, practises corrections, keeps records, and can explain why a phrase changed after feedback.

Why music that lives in sound still uses writing

Notation helps memory, teaching and analysis, but cannot capture the full continuous life of Hindustani music. Meend shape, exact intonation, tone, microtiming and raga nuance exceed simple symbols.

The Paluskar system uses its own symbol conventions for duration, rhythm and swara representation. A Prarambhik student should not mix systems casually. Learn the one required by the teacher/board and be able to recognise that another system exists.

Below is one sthayi line of a simple sargam-geet-style composition in Raga Bhupali, set to Teentaal in madhya laya, written the way an examination answer book expects. Bhupali is chosen deliberately: all its swaras are shuddha, so no komal or tivra signs are needed and the layout itself can be studied cleanly. One swara falls on each matra; where a swara is sustained through the next matra, this table uses a dash (-), standing in for the traditional avagraha sign (ऽ) used in printed Bhatkhande notation.

Reading checklist for any notated line: first find the tala signs (X, 2, 0, 3) and count the matras per vibhag; then read the swaras, watching for komal lines beneath letters, the tivra mark above Ma, and register dots (below a letter for mandra, above for taar); finally sing the line in sargam while clapping the tala. Written music is only confirmed when it has passed through the voice.

Try it yourself: Copy the table's line into your notebook in proper Bhatkhande layout: swaras above, bols below, vibhag bars between matras 4–5, 8–9 and 12–13. Then notate, from memory, the aroh of your current raga in the same style. From Praveshika level onward, written papers will ask exactly this skill.

Why notation is not enough: Two musicians can read the same skeleton and produce very different raga quality. The ear remains primary.

28. Riyaaz: How Practice Changes Skill

A disciplined loop rather than mindless repetition

Riyaaz is deliberate musical practice. Four years of experience can produce strong skill or repeated habit depending on how practice is organised. The learner should distinguish between "time spent" and "attention spent".

Instrumentalists can hide behind finger memory. Ear training prevents this. The learner should be able to hear a swara internally before searching for the fret.

Final message to the student: The examiner is not looking for a machine that never slips. The deeper goal is to hear whether the learner has begun to organise sound consciously: stable swara, recognisable raga, dependable laya, respect for tala, and an instrument that responds to an alert ear. Four years of hands-on training becomes meaningful when the student can both DO and EXPLAIN.
