Karnataka Kala Yatre

ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಕಲಾ ಯಾತ್ರೆ — a trail through the home state's arts

This site is curated from Bengaluru, and Karnataka's treasures are scattered through every section — a deep dive here, a museum exhibit there, a carver's village on the sculpture page. This trail gathers them onto one path: eleven stops from the coast's night-theatre to the Dharwad singers to the soapstone lace of Belur. Walk it in order, or jump to what calls you. Published for ಕನ್ನಡ ರಾಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸವ — Karnataka Rajyotsava, November 1 — and kept open all year.

❖ ❖ ❖

The Coast — theatre that lasts till dawn

Yakshagana — the crown jewel

Coastal KarnatakaFull deep dive · in 3 languages

Karnataka's total theatre has the site's fullest treatment: a complete deep dive — the two tittus, the himmela, arthagarike, the night's arc — available in English, ಕನ್ನಡ (the home edition) and हिन्दी. The touring mela season begins around November — Rajyotsava month is when the coast's nights come alive.

Talamaddale & Bhuta Kola

Two more coastal wonders: talamaddale, the sit-down theatre of pure improvised argument; and Bhuta Kola / Daiva Aradhane, the spirit-worship performance tradition of Tulu Nadu whose torchlit intensity shaped the region's imagination.

The Drum-Dances — the open field's thunder

The Voice — from Haridasa song to Dharwad dawn

The Kannada song traditions

Dasa sahitya and vachana song — Purandara Dasa, called the grandfather of Carnatic pedagogy, composed in Kannada for everyone, and his exercises still begin nearly every Carnatic student's first lesson, five centuries on.

The Dharwad miracle

One north-Karnataka region gave Hindustani music an astonishing share of its modern greats — Mallikarjun Mansur, Gangubai Hangal, Basavaraj Rajguru, Bhimsen Joshi, Kumar Gandharva. The vocal deep dive tells the Dharwad story; Bhimsen Joshi, Bharat Ratna, is its summit.

The Stone — Karnataka carved

The Hand — painting and craft

Mysore painting

Gentler cousin of Tanjore's gold-relief style, with its own gesso and muted palette — the painting page sets the two side by side.

Bidriware, Channapatna, Ilkal & Mysore silk

The silver-on-black metal magic of Bidar, the lacquered toys of Channapatna (a GI-tagged craft, and a museum exhibit), and the loom traditions of Ilkal and Mysore silk on the crafts page.

The Voices — and where to stand

Voices of Karnataka

The personalities page keeps a Karnataka corner: Kuvempu, whose Jaya Bharata Jananiya Tanujate is the state anthem sung on Rajyotsava day; Shivarama Karanth, Yakshagana's modernising conscience; and Dr. Rajkumar, whose voice carried Kannada song to every home.

ಹಬ್ಬದ ಶುಭಾಶಯಗಳು: this trail links to pages across the site rather than repeating them — each stop opens a fuller room. The deepest rooms are already in ಕನ್ನಡ where it matters most: Yakshagana in Kannada, the museum, and the whole survey site.
